Prof. Andrea Cavalleri

Condensed Matter Division

Our work investigates the non-equilibrium dynamics of solids, with special emphasis on those systems with strong electron-electron interactions. Unconventional (Mott) insulating states, charge and spin density waves, colossal magnetoresistance and high-temperature superconductivity are some of the phenomena of interest.

Experiment at FLASH

To understand these processes, we make use of short pulses of light, from THz frequencies to X-rays, using laboratory-scale sources, synchrotron facilities and Free Electron Lasers. The ultimate goal is to control and image the dynamic behavior of matter on time and lengthscales relevant for microscopic physics, stimulate new functionalities and understand how microscopic processes scale up to macroscopic phenomena.
