We study charge dynamics occurring in solids, surfaces and adsorbates using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy. Of particular interest are the processes of charge transfer through interfaces, charge screening, and the creation of excited charge states, which can directly precede structural dynamics and phase-transitions in bulk materials.
Our work utilizes the shortest, most energetic optical laser pulses available, which can be converted by optical rectification, harmonic generation, and high-harmonic generation to simultaneously cover an extremely broad region of the electromagnetic spectrum. With this source, few-femtosecond to attosecond dynamics can be accessed.
